Gera Indices was commissioned by gallerist Ulrike Rudiger for the opening of an exhibition curated by Katarina Vatsella at “L’Orangerie”. There is a tradition in Europe to commission sound works for art openings – wonderful idea. My piece was comprised of found sounds that I recorded in Gera, took back to my studio, analyzed through a sonogram module in Csound then used the numeric analysis as input to create “identical” sounds. But, of course, the two sound files were not identical. Then, I experimented with convolution and morphing to develop a sound palette of hybrid sounds; musique concrete/digital synthesis. The idea was to present the listener with a composition whose elements were audio ambiguities that would be simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar. I mixed the files live at the opening, and the recording you hear is the result of that mix.
